Students with upcoming exams and vulnerable children have been prioritised for a limited place inside their school today, following guidance from the Department for Education (DfE). Many classrooms across the region will be closed throughout the day while NEU members strike, with some year groups told to stay at home. The government wants to enforce minimum service levels in certain sectors, with no automatic protection from unfair dismissal for workers who strike when told to work. Trade unions are teaming up for a major rally in the city centre from 12.30pm, in protest at proposed changes to strike laws. It's the first of seven strike days for the union in total, with four of those days affecting the North West. ![]() Picket lines have formed outside Greater Manchester schools as thousands of teachers in the National Education Union (NEU) walk out today. It comes as teachers and university staff join rail, bus and civil service workers on strike today (February 1). Trade union members are set to take part in a major rally in Manchester city centre.
